- The FDA has approved the following new drug:
- Istodax (romidepsin), a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor, for the treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL) in patients who have received at least one prior systemic therapy.
- Two new generic drug forms have been approved by the FDA:
- ketorolac tromethamine 0.4% and 0.5% ophthalmic solution – The 0.4% solution is indicated for the reduction of ocular pain and burning/stinging following corneal refractive surgery. The 0.5% solution is indicated for the temporary relief of ocular itching caused by seasonal allergic conjunctivitis and for the treatment of postoperative inflammation in patients who have undergone cataract extraction. The 0.4% solution is generically equivalent to Acular LS and the 0.5% solution is equivalent to Acular.
- lansoprazole 15 and 30 mg delayed-release capsules – Lansoprazole is indicated for the short-term treatment and maintenance of healed duodenal ulcers; in combination therapy for H. pylori eradication to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence; for short-term treatment of active benign gastric ulcer; for healing and risk reduction of NSAID-associated gastric ulcer; for short-term treatment of symptomatic GERD; for maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis; and for long-term treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The medication is the generic equivalent of Prevacid.
- McNeil Consumer Healthcare has issued a precautionary voluntary recall of 5 product lots of Tylenol Arthritis Pain caplets (100 count bottles) after identifying an uncharacteristic smell or taste associated with these lots that led to some consumers reporting nausea and related symptoms (http://www.tylenol.com/page2.jhtml?id=tylenol/news/subp_news.inc).
- Hospira Inc. has voluntarily recalled 85 lots of <i>Liposyn</i> II 10%, <i>Liposyn</i> II 20%, <i>Liposyn</i> III 10%, <i>Liposyn</i> III 20%, and <i>Liposyn</i> III 30%, and 73 lots of propofol injectable emulsion 1% products (lot numbers beginning with 79 and 80) distributed between July and October 2009 (http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ucm189564.htm). Particulate matter originating from stainless steel equipment used in the manufacturing process has been found in some of the containers.
- A fatal medication error occurred when a nurse confused an order for NaLoxone with LaNoxin. A patient’s physician called in an order for NaLoxone, but the nurse heard LaNoxin. Two ampules of LaNoxin were administered before the mistake was realized. The patient subsequently died.
- Be alert to the following risk factors for respiratory depression in patients using patient-controlled analgesia (PCA):
- Use of basal infusion
- Advanced age
- Obesity
- Upper abdominal surgery
- Obstructive sleep apnea
- CNS depressant use
- Renal, cardiopulmonary, or hepatic impairment
- Pump programming errors
- PCA by proxy
- Lack of opioid tolerance
