| Dear
NursingCenter member,
Happy New Year!
The
most common types of cardiac surgery are coronary artery bypass
surgery and valve surgery. While once referred to as 'open-heart
surgery,' recent advances have made this name a thing of the
past. In July of 2004, the United States Food
and Drug Administration approved a robotic like device
that allows a surgeon to perform the procedure using a sternotomy
or a thoracotomy incision while seated at a console with a
video monitor and computer.
It was also once commonplace
for a patient undergoing cardiac surgery to be placed on a
cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine so the surgeon could
work on a motionless heart. However, it is now an option for
a surgeon to use an off-pump technique, where the heart is
operated on while it is still in motion; the operative site
is held still using stabilizers.
This technique avoids the complications of platelet dysfunctions
and perfusion deficits associated with the CPB machine.

articles available on the topic of cardiac surgery by exploring
