| Dear
Colleague,
December
6th through 12th is National Handwashing Awareness
Week! Hand hygiene plays a central role in preventing
the transmission of infections. Protect your patients by performing
hand hygiene routinely and thoroughly before and after patient care.
Remember these basics:
- When using an alcohol-based
hand rub, apply it to the surface of one palm and rub over
all hand surfaces until your hands are dry.
- When
washing with soap and water, wet your hands before applying
the soap, then rub vigorously for at least 15 seconds, and
dry thoroughly. Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet
to avoid recontamination of your hands.
Read more on this topic
by exploring the articles in More Resources as well as the
CDC's Guideline
for Hand Hygiene in Health-Care Settings.

Those of us who've been in practice for a long time ask the question,"What is the future of nursing?" I am happy to say that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in Collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has established a major initiative on the Future of Nursing. According to the RWJF website (http://www.rwjf.org/), this initiative will examine the capacity of the nursing workforce to meet the demands of a reformed health care and public health system. Check out FOCUS ON: RWJF Future of Nursing Initiative.
Anne Dabrow Woods, Chief Nursing Officer of Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) and Ovid and Publisher of AJN, hosted a lively, free webcast that shed light on one hospital's cutting-edge approach to delivering evidence-based nursing care at the bedside. If you missed the live event, you can view the archived webcast here.
