Changes associated with aging can make I.V. insertion challenging. Reduce the risks of venipuncture in older adults by keeping the following tips in mind:

  • Avoid bruised areas or skin tears.
  • Use the smallest catheter possible.
  • Note the depth of the vein to determine insertion angle.
  • Apply traction to the vein below the insertion site.
  • Avoid side access; insert the catheter directly on top of the vein.

A nationwide recall of a single lot of hydromorphone hydrochloride 2 mg tablets has been issued due to potential for oversized tablets and possible overdosage. An increase in adverse reactions including respiratory depression, low blood pressure, and sedation, can occur. The recalled tablets are blue and round, embossed with "E" on one side and "2" on the other.
