A hypertensive crisis can be categorized as hypertensive emergency or hypertensive urgency. Hypertensive emergency is when blood pressure is severely elevated (greater than 180/120 mm Hg) and there is evidence of impending or progressive target organ damage. Hypertensive urgency is the term used to describe a severe elevation in blood pressure without evidence of target organ damage.

The FDA has approved the following new indications:

  • Symbicort (budesonide/formoterol fumarate dihydrate) 160/4.5 mcg pressurized metered dose inhaler for the twice-daily maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
  • Copaxone (glatiramer acetate injection) to treat patients who have experienced a first clinical episode of multiple sclerosis (MS) and have magnetic resonance imaging features consistent with MS.
