Dear
Subscriber,
Happy
National Nurses Week! In light of this year's theme,
Nurses: Building a Healthy America, I've
chosen to focus on patient education as one of the many ways
that we keep our patients healthy. Take some time to explore
the articles in More Resources. Feel free to download and
print the patient education tools to share with your patients.
Also, be sure to take
part in our latest puzzle, All
about you! In this word search puzzle,
the unused letters spell out a secret message. Email [email protected]
with your solution in the subject line and you'll have a chance
to win a free copy of NDH2009! Deadline for submissions is Friday, May 15th. 10 winners will be selected at random from correct submissions. Good luck!
Also, don't miss
our next issue for Asthma &
Allergy Awareness Month, plus the latest articles
and CEs. Enjoy your week – you deserve it!

A New Look at the Old
Immobility and Functional Decline: Avoiding the Spiral
Older adults immobilized
with bedrest, and tethered with foley catheters, IVs, and other devices
that restrict mobility, can begin to lose functional capacity (a process
known as deconditioning) within 48 hours. Deconditioning lengthens the
recovery process, puts patients at risk for complications, and may require
discharge to an intermediate care facility rather than a return to home--factors
affecting quality and cost of care, and patient and staff satisfaction.
Listen to the science and see how
one facility is changing its policies and practices to create an elder-friendly
environment that puts function first!.
