April 6, 2010

Dear Colleague,

My family and I have had several discussions about organ donation. Is this typical? I don’t think so. Our conversations have probably stemmed from the fact that my husband and I have both worked with organ donors (in the critical care units) and organ recipients (caring for lung transplant patients both immediately post-transplant and during pulmonary rehabilitation). When do “laypeople” usually have these conversations? My guess is at the Department of Motor Vehicles during license renewals and in emergency departments and critical care units when stress and the need for decision-making are beyond overwhelming.

April is National Donate Life Month. Explore the articles in More Resources to brush up on organ donation and your role as a nurse. Also, is it time for you to discuss your intentions with your own family? Now is the time to do it!
