Dear
Colleague,
An arterial blood gas (ABG) can give you information about a patient's oxygenation, acid-base balance, pulmonary function, and metabolic status. Normal values vary depending on the laboratory, but it is helpful to be familiar with the general ranges:
- Pao2, 80 to 100 mm Hg
- Sao2, 95% to 100%
- pH, 7.35 to 7.45
- Paco2, 35 to 45 mm Hg
- HCO3-, 22 to 26 mEq/L
- lactate, less than 2 mmol/L in critically ill patients.
Learn more about ABGs, other laboratory values, and disorders that impact these values, by exploring the articles in More Resources. Don't miss our next issue about summer emergencies and sports injuries, plus the latest articles and CE opportunities!
