Colleague,
 Infectious
disease – what does this mean? Is it more than just
an infection? Are infectious diseases chronic illnesses? How
are they transmitted? Can they be cured?
Infectious diseases are
caused by pathogenic microorganisms, or germs, such as bacteria,
viruses, parasites or fungi. They can spread, directly or
indirectly, from one person to another. The answers to the
questions above vary from disease to disease. For example,
hepatitis C is a chronic illness that spreads through contact
with infected blood, through sex with an infected person,
or from mother to baby during delivery, whereas influenza
is a treatable infection that mainly spreads through the air
via respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing.
