 According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death. Twelve million Americans are diagnosed with COPD and 12 million more Americans may have the disease and remain undiagnosed.
November is National COPD Awareness Month. Take some time to learn more about COPD; remember COPD refers to two diseases: chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Both are characterized by irreversible airflow obstruction that interferes with normal breathing and gas exchange. Signs and symptoms generally develop over a long period and include:

The FDA has approved Pradaxa (dabigatran etexilate) 75 and 150 mg capsules for prevention of stroke and blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation.
The FDA has approved the following new indications:
- H.P. Acthar gel (repository corticotropin injection) for the treatment of infantile spasms.
- Botox injection (onabotulinumtoxinA) for the prevention of headaches in adults with chronic migraine.
- Herceptin (trastuzumab) in combination with cisplatin plus either capecitabine or 5-fluorouracil for treatment of HER2-positive metastatic cancer of the stomach or gastroesophageal junction in patients who have not received prior treatment for metastatic disease.
