Dear Colleague,

While reading the articles about stroke for this edition of our enewsletter, I learned that 14% of patients in U.S. hospitals will have a stroke while hospitalized. This is a good reminder that we all must be alert for stroke symptoms, no matter where we practice or what patient populations we see most often. Take a moment to remember the following warning signs of stroke from the American Heart Association:

  • sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
  • sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
  • sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
  • sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
  • sudden,  severe headache with no known cause.

Learn more about strokes, emergency interventions, and nursing care by exploring the articles in More Resources. Don't miss our next issue for American Heart Month, plus the latest must-read articles and CEs!
