Dear Colleague,

As we head into summertime, let’s review some patient education regarding sun safety. In preparing for this issue of our eNewsletter, I learned that skin cancer has a higher incidence than breast, colon, prostate, and lung cancer combined.  Share these tips with your patients and be sure to protect yourself too!

1. When possible, avoid exposure to the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
2. Avoid exposure to artificial sources of UV radiation, for example sunlamps and tanning booths.
3. If you must be outside, wear long sleeves, long pants, and a hat with a wide brim.
4. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater. Apply sunscreen every 4 hours while exposed.
5. Also remember to protect yourself from the glare of UV rays reflected by sand, water, snow, and ice.
6. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and the skin surrounding the eyes.
7. Regularly examine your skin and get regular assessments by a healthcare provider if you have a higher than normal risk for malignant melanoma.
