Dear Colleague,

Being a nurse manager doesn't just mean dealing with daily staffing issues. The articles in this month's More Resources collection give a glimpse of the many issues and tasks that managers face. For example, technology is a big factor today, from electronic health records, equipment, and handheld devices (which to use, how to obtain and pay for them, training) to social media concerns (patient privacy, development and enforcement of hospital policies). Also, an awareness and understanding of financial concerns are necessary for nurse managers to contribute to health care decisions and strategic planning. Recruitment and retention, substance abuse, patient safety, and dealing with missteps or serious adverse events if and when they occur, are a few more of the issues that managers may face.

Strong leadership is critical to our profession. If you are a manager or interested in pursuing a management position in the future, I encourage you to get to know our journals geared to managers: Nursing Management, Journal of Nursing Administration, and Nursing Administration Quarterly.
