Dear Colleague,
May is American Stroke Month – a good time to increase your own knowledge about stroke and spread awareness to others. Start by testing yourself with the following questions; then check your answers and learn more by reading the articles in our More Resources box.
- What is the only treatment of acute ischemic stroke which extensive research has shown significantly reduces disability without increasing the risk of death?
- Can you list three classes of secondary stroke prevention medications?
- What are the five basic elements of a successful caregiver needs assessment?
- How does the use of exogenous estrogen affect a woman’s stroke risk?
- Who derives a greater benefit from t-PA – men or women?
- Why is the theme “absent presence” used to describe the parent-child relationship after stroke?
Visit the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines: Stroke page for more resources and tools. There is also a wonderful interactive workbook, Maximizing Independence After Stroke, that you can share with patients.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Lisa Bonsall, MSN, RN, CRNP
Clinical Editor

In response to serious postmarketing adverse reactions, including atypical femur fractures, osteonecrosis of the jaw, and esophageal cancer, the FDA conducted a systematic review of long-term bisphosphonate efficacy. This class includes alendronate (Fosamax), etidronate (Didronel), ibandronate (Boniva), pamidronate, risedronate (Actonel, Atelvia), tiludronate (Skelid), and zoledronic acid (Reclast, Zometa). The FDA was unable to identify subgroups of patients likely to benefit from therapy beyond 3 to 5 years. Continuation of treatment should be based on individual assessment of risks, benefits, and preferences of patients and their physicians.
