Top 10 domestic public health achievements

The past decade has yielded improvements in vaccines, declining mortality from certain chronic diseases, and less death and injury from motor vehicle crashes. Notable breakthroughs include the pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines and a 58% decline in central line-associated bloodstream infections.


Accountable care organizations: Are you ready?

According to the AHA, most healthcare organizations will require substantial work to create the type of accountable care suitable for private insurers, Medicare, Medicaid, state health exchanges, and/or employers.


Reserving EDs for actual emergencies

Given the mounting concern over adequate access to primary care, a recent U.S. Government Accountability Office report examines how health centers may help reduce the unnecessary use of EDs.


Meaningful use incentives underway

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is currently issuing Medicare incentive checks for meaningful use of electronic health records authorized under the HITECH Act. More than $83 million has been issued since the program started in January.
