Education matters…
When I received my BSN in 1984, continuing my education wasn’t on my radar. But as I began my career journey, I quickly came to realize that to provide the best patient care, I had to be open to learning something new every day. I needed to know where and how to find the best information. Off to school I went, juggling a family and a full-time job, and in 1998, I completed my MSN and graduated as a nurse practitioner.
Fast forward to the present day: I’m now back in school working toward my doctor of nursing practice through an online program, while still juggling family responsibilities and a full-time job.
Healthcare is evolving at a breakneck pace, so we need to think differently about how we deliver care. Research shows a clear link between higher levels of nursing education and better patient outcomes. That said, it’s vital for us, as nurse leaders, to create an environment that fosters life-long learning. Encourage staff members to further their education and to ground their daily practice in evidence.

Readmission rates still up, despite Medicare penalties
A recent report shows that roughly one in six Medicare patients land back in the hospital within a month of discharge for a medical condition. In fact, readmission rates for some conditions have increased—not decreased--despite Medicare penalties.
The Joint Commission releases annual report on quality and safety
The Joint Commission’s sixth annual report, which presents scientific evidence of hospital performance and how it relates to common medical conditions and procedures, demonstrates continual improvement on accountability measures over a nine-year period.
More hospitals offering CAM
More than 42% of hospitals offer complementary and alternative medicine services, up from 37% in 2007, according to a new survey released by Health Forum and the Samueli Institute, a nonprofit research organization that investigates healing-oriented practices.
CDC tackles chronic disease
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention granted $103 million in Patient Protection and Affordable Care to prevent chronic disease. Recipients will use the Community Transformation Grants to support tobacco-free living, exercise and healthy eating, and prevent/control high blood pressure and cholesterol, with a focus on reducing health disparities.
