Dear NursingCenter Member,

Happy New Year!

The most common types of cardiac surgery are coronary artery bypass surgery and valve surgery. While once referred to as 'open-heart surgery,' recent advances have made this name a thing of the past. In July of 2004, the United States Food and Drug Administration approved a robotic like device that allows a surgeon to perform the procedure using a sternotomy or a thoracotomy incision while seated at a console with a video monitor and computer.

It was also once commonplace for a patient undergoing cardiac surgery to be placed on a cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) machine so the surgeon could work on a motionless heart. However, it is now an option for a surgeon to use an off-pump technique, where the heart is operated on while it is still in motion; the operative site is held still using stabilizers. This technique avoids the complications of platelet dysfunctions and perfusion deficits associated with the CPB machine.
