Dear Colleague,

Pain is a subjective symptom; we learn that early on in nursing school and are often reminded of it during our careers. It is challenging to assess and can be even more complex to manage. It is different for every individual no matter the diagnosis, procedure, or other cause. Nurses and other health care professionals continue to strive to understand our patients' pain and relieve it. The collection of articles in More Resources includes the most recent publications from our journals. Here are a few things I learned from reading them; I hope you find them helpful too!

  • What is the definition of "pain pattern," how can it be assessed, and how can pain pattern information be used in clinical practice?
  • Why are racial and ethnic minority groups less likely to receive optimal pain management? What tools are available to help provide culturally comfortable care?
  • What are some consequences of untreated acute postoperative pain?
  • How does pain affect wound healing?
  • What practical skills are necessary and what tools are especially helpful when assessing and treating pain at the end of life?
  • How does pain after CABG surgery compare between men and women?

Read the selected articles to learn these answers and more!
