Should the FDA have oversight of medical apps?
Through draft guidance released on July 19, the FDA has defined a small subset of mobile medical apps that may impact on the performance or functionality of currently regulated medical devices and, as such, will require FDA oversight. Through October 19, the FDA is seeking feedback from manufacturers, healthcare providers, and others on how its proposal may support the balance between promoting innovation and ensuring safety and effectiveness.

AHRQ: More than 6 million pediatric hospital stays in 2009
There were 6.4 million hospital stays for children age 17 and younger in 2009—nearly 17% of all hospital stays—and about three-quarters of these were for infants under age 1, according to a new Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality report. Compared with all hospitalizations, stays for children were on average shorter (3.8 days) and less expensive—about half the average cost for stays overall—with the aggregate cost for children’s stays at $33.6 billion, or about 9% of total hospital costs.
