Survey: 80% of hospitals plan to adopt EHRs

Four-fifths of the nation’s hospitals, and 41% of office-based physicians, currently intend to take advantage of federal incentive payments for adoption and meaningful use of certified electronic health records technology, according to a new survey by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology.


Cancer costs may exceed $150 billion by 2020

According to a National Institutes of Health analysis, medical expenditures for cancer in the year 2020 are projected to reach at least $158 billion—an increase of 27% over 2010.


CDC issues 2011 health disparities report

The CDC has issued “Health Disparities and Inequalities in the United States—2011,” which examines disparities in mortality, morbidity, behavioral risk factors, healthcare access, preventive health services, and social determinants of critical health problems.

About 22% of patients receive implantable cardioverter-defibrillators to prevent sudden cardiac death when practice guidelines don’t recommend them, according to a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
