The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology recently announced The Million Hearts Risk Check Challenge, inviting developers to create a mobile app that will help patients reduce their risk for heart disease by learning to control their BP and cholesterol.
Support for nurse advancement
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requested a new initiative be put in place that will help increase the U.S. primary care workforce. The Graduate Nurse Education Demonstration is aimed at monetarily supporting organizations that train advanced practice RNs.
Is telemedicine cost effective?
A study, published in the journal Chest, investigated whether remote monitoring of ICU patients will actually save hospitals money. The costs range from $50,000 to $100,000 per bed for the first year of operation.
Payment systems—final rule
A final ruling has been made regarding the hospital inpatient and long-term care hospital prospective payment systems. It’s been determined that inpatient hospital payments will increase by 2.3% ($2.5 billion) in the 2013 fiscal year instead of being cut by 0.8% ($850 million).
