FDA approves melanoma therapy

The FDA approved Yeryov for the treatment of patients with unresectable (inoperable) or metastatic melanoma. The recombinant, human monoclonal antibody, is the first FDA-approved cancer immunotherapy that blocks the cytotoxic T- lymphocyte antigen-4.

Fewer bloodstream infections reported

In the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vital Signs, it is reported that new data show that 58% fewer bloodstream infections occurred in hospital ICU patients with central lines in 2009 than in 2001.

Shingles vaccine approved for expanded use

The shingles vaccine Zostavax has been approved for use in patients between the ages of 50 and 59; it was previously approved for those over age 60.

Breast cancer is no longer declining in U.S. women

New research shows a sharp decline in breast cancer incidence rates among non-Hispanic white women in the U.S. after a dramatic drop in the use of postmenopausal hormone therapy didn’t continue through 2007.
