Shocking study finds that pharmacies deny Plan-B contraceptive to teens

A recent undercover survey observed a group of 17 year-old teens going to pharmacies for Plan-B birth control. The popular contraceptive dubbed the “morning after pill” is legal for this age group, but the survey found that many pharmacists deterred the teens from getting the contraception stating that they were not allowed, or were not old enough. This is a major issue, as researchers have concluded that teen girls who were turned away were very unlikely to return for the contraception which has the potential to prevent half of all unplanned teen pregnancies.

New guidelines suggest eliminating annual pap smears

The traditional notion that pap smears should be conducted once a year in order to screen for cervical cancer is now being challenged. New guidelines suggest that it is unnecessary to have annual tests done, and that limited testing reduces the risk for false-positive tests and insignificant follow up procedures. If a woman’s co-testing results (a pap smear and HPV test) come back negative, she can safely wait as long as five years before her next pap smear.

Weight loss surgery more beneficial than medication for diabetes patients

A new study has concluded that bariatric surgery has a more significant impact on glycemic control in type 2 diabetes patients than medication alone. Patients that underwent the surgery had improved outcomes, sustained metabolic control, and a reduced dependence on diabetes medication.

Use of new iPad features by healthcare providers is extremely beneficial

The introduction of the new iPad has generated more healthcare-specific features that cater directly to the provider/patient relationship. The Bluetooth Smart-Ready tablet has the ability to connect providers to patients in and out of the office. Data can be directly transmitted into the iPad giving the provider and patient new and convenient ways to monitor and view files, patient diagnostics, and patient data in real-time.
