Leukemia cured in eight days via gene therapy

A new treatment approach for leukemia works by identifying a molecule unique to the surface of cancer cells and then genetically engineers a patient’s immune cells to attack the cancer. This method has helped cure three patients who were all previously diagnosed with (generally) fatal relapses of acute lymphoblastic leukemia but have now been in remission between 5 months and 2 years. One patient was cured within eight days.

A smartphone device could save lives

A team of scientists at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have developed a medical device that can turn your smartphone into a lifesaver. The small implant device monitors your blood and can send a warning to your smartphone (via Bluetooth) if it detects any major oncoming issues, including heart attacks.

CDC: Mothers are giving their babies solid foods too early

According to research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 40.4% of mothers in the US are giving their infants solid foods earlier (before 4 months of age) than experts recommend. This is an approximate increase of 29% from previous studies. In addition, 55% of mothers cited their doctor’s advice as one of the reasons for introducing solid foods this early on.

Excessive television viewing linked to antisocial behavior in children

Five-year-old children that watch television for three or more hours a day are more inclined to have antisocial behaviors by age 7, which include fighting and stealing. Researchers also found that playing computer or video games had no effect on children’s behavior. The authors noted that this increased level of television viewing was not associated with emotional or attention problems.
