Study shows neglected children have altered brain structure
A new study from researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital compared children raised in Romania’s state-run orphanage with children raised in normal Romanian family homes. MRI brain scans suggest that the children who were raised in the orphanage developed less amounts of grey and white matter volume in the cortex in comparison to their counterparts.
Shortage of nurses leads to new direction in nursing education
The largest demographic of registered nurses is nearing retirement, causing a shortage of nurses in the healthcare industry. Second lady, Dr. Jill Biden, and U.S. Secretary of Labor, Hilda Solis, are seeking to increase the number of nursing students at community colleges to counter this shortage.
Resistance to antiretroviral drugs increasing in AIDS
According to a new study by the World Health Organization and University College London, the AIDS virus is building a resistance to antiretroviral drugs in parts of Africa. The study consists of data from over 200 smaller studies performed all over the world with the most serious cases of resistance found only in eastern and southern Africa.
Prostate cancer screening “causes more harm than good” according to studies
The 2008 recommendation against prostate cancer screening for men 75 and older caused a steady decrease in early-stage incidences within this demographic. Mitchell H. Katz, MD, of the LA County Department of Health Services stated that the evidence behind screening for prostate cancer and it’s correlation to adverse effects has grown substantially over the past decade.
