California premiums rate increases delayed

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones announced that three major insurers have agreed to postpone any premium rate increases for 60 days.

Hot flashes, night sweats may reduce breast cancer risk

It sounds too good to be true, but there might be a bright side to the night sweats, hot flashes and other unpleasantries associated with menopause. A new study finds that women who experience such symptoms may be at reduced risk of several common forms of breast cancer.

Only some men should use AIDS drug for prevention

Only high-risk gay and bisexual men should use Gilead's HIV drug Truvada to protect themselves from the AIDS virus, federal officials said in the first official guidance on using the drug.

CDC: Diabetes on the rise

The number of Americans who have type 2 diabetes has risen to nearly 26 million, federal officials announced. In addition, about 79 million U.S. adults have "prediabetes," a condition in which blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

The 2011 NP of the Year award honors excellence in clinical expertise, leadership, community service, and education. The award will be announced in the May 2011 issue of The Nurse Practitioner and presented at the National Conference for Nurse Practitioners opening ceremonies in Las Vegas, NV, May 11-14, 2011. The selected honoree will also receive a complimentary full conference registration to this year’s program.

Who is eligible?
Eligible nominees include NPs who have made significant contributions to the NP field in at least two of the categories listed below:

Directed, provided and/or developed practice or policy that affected a large number of people/special population
Uniqueness and innovation
Advanced the NP profession
Contributed to new knowledge or practice
Gained the attention of local or national leaders (leaders can be nursing, community, political, etc.)
Had a substantial and positive impact on public health or health of a special community or patient group

How do I nominate someone?
Nominations should be made in writing and include a letter (maximum 2 pages, double-spaced) explaining how the candidate met the award criteria, and any pertinent data, tools, teaching displays, pictures, or other material to support the nomination letter.
