First-ever guidelines released for treatment of type 2 diabetes in children and teens
The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines for the treatment of type 2 diabetes in children and teenagers from 10 to 18 years of age. Most pediatricians have only had to deal with type 1 diabetes until recently, but due to an increase of obesity in children over the years, it is important for pediatricians and endocrinologists to have evidence-based treatment guidelines to treat type 2 diabetes as well. The guidelines are the first of their kind for this demographic.
Lumpectomy survival rates better than mastectomy
According to a new analysis, women who have small, early breast cancers may have a higher chance of survival if they undergo a lumpectomy with radiation as opposed to a mastectomy. Although it was not discovered why mastectomy patients had higher mortality rates, researchers suggested that their findings give confidence in future breast-conserving treatments. Over the past 10 years, women diagnosed with breast cancer – regardless of the cancer’s size – have opted for a mastectomy.
Many people prefer not using gadgets to track health issues
A new survey from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project shows that 7 out of 10 people track health issues or symptoms for themselves or a loved one. While some of them keep track with digital devices, the majority prefer writing things down. The survey, which involved 3,014 adults across the country, indicated that keeping tabs on weight, diet, and exercise ranked among the highest-tracked subjects.
Gatorade to remove controversial ingredient
Pepsi will stop adding brominated vegetable oil (BVO), an ingredient of recent controversy, to their Gatorade sports drinks. BVO is banned in Japan and the European Union and is used in flame retardants. A spokeswoman for Gatorade said that new batches of their drinks (without the ingredient) will be released across the US over the next few months. While BVO will be removed from Gatorade, it can still be found in other citrus soft drinks.
