Study shows that individualized treatment with NPs can cut heart risk factors

Heart disease has become a national issue, one that many patients are aware of but rarely take steps toward preventing. In a study conducted by John Hopkins University School of Nursing, patients suffering from cardiovascular disease were attended to and counseled by a nurse-led team, which tailored treatment specific to the patient. These patients showed a significantly greater reduction in several high risk heart-health concerns than patients only seeing their primary care providers.

National drug shortages severely impacting ADHD patients

Many adults and children now rely on ADHD medicine to stay focused and calm, and this need has many patients worried that they will be unable to refill prescriptions fast enough. There is controversy between drug manufacturers looking for profit with the increased demand, and the DEA which is looking to prevent any misuse or abuse of the drug.

Growing debate on importance of thyroid checks during pregnancy checkups

Research has found that pregnant women going in for checkups may need to have a thyroid gland blood test as well. Separate studies have shown that an underactive thyroid can raise a woman's risk of miscarriage, premature birth, or a lower IQ for her baby. The extra stress on the gland caused by pregnancy makes this a serious concern that is currently being investigated by the healthcare community.

Nominate your colleague for NP of the Year!

The 2012 NP of the Year award honors excellence in clinical expertise, leadership, community service, and education. The award will be announced in the May 2011 issue of The Nurse Practitioner and presented at the National Conference for Nurse Practitioners opening ceremonies in Orlando, Fla, May 16-19, 2012. The selected honoree will also receive a complimentary full conference registration to this year’s program.

Who is eligible?
Eligible nominees include NPs who have made significant contributions to the NP field in at least two of the categories listed below:

Directed, provided and/or developed practice or policy that affected a large number of people/special population
Uniqueness and innovation
Advanced the NP profession
Contributed to new knowledge or practice
Gained the attention of local or national leaders (leaders can be nursing, community, political, etc.)
Had a substantial and positive impact on public health or health of a special community or patient group

How do I nominate someone?
Nominations should be made in writing and include a letter (maximum 2 pages, double-spaced) explaining how the candidate met the award criteria, and any pertinent data, tools, teaching displays, pictures, or other material to support the nomination letter.
