Students create parody music video protesting new lunch restrictions
Students and teachers from Wallace County High School in Sharon Springs, Kansas, created a video parody protesting recent restrictions on high school lunch menus. Using the song, “We Are Young” by the band simply known as Fun, students and teachers created the music video, mocking what they deemed inadequate lunch portions at their school.
Scar-free healing in mice may help in human skin repair
A new study suggests that mice with brittle skin may help researchers heal human wounds without leaving scars. A certain breed of African mice that had lost up to 60% of the skin on their backs were able to regrow both skin and hair. While mammals have very limited regenerative capabilities compared to reptiles, this study shows that mammals may in fact have higher regenerative capabilities than initially expected. The mice were also able to regenerate hair follicles, sweat glands, and cartilage from large holes punched into their ears.
A virus that can fight acne
Viruses that can destroy acne-causing bacteria (Propionibacterium acnes) could possibly be used as a potent acne treatment. A type of virus known as bacteriophage (or phage) injects its genetic material into bacteria, which causes them to create more phages until the bacteria bursts. Researchers are suggesting that a phage-based topical cream might be an effective acne treatment.
UK cancer death rates set to drop 17% by 2030
According to statistics from Cancer Research UK, cancer-related deaths (for all cancers, adjusted for age) will fall 17% in the UK by 2030. These stats are due to better survival rates (via early diagnosis and improved treatments) and reflect reduced smoking-related cancers, which lead to fewer deaths.
