For some hurricane evacuees, safety brought even more troubles

With the hope of avoiding a Hurricane Katrina situation, thousands of New York patients in low-lying hospitals and nursing homes in the projected path of Hurricane Irene were evacuated to safer ground. However, many of these vulnerable patients found themselves at risk anyway as facilities were unprepared for the influx of new patients.


Longer CPR is no better than shorter for cardiac arrest patients

During a cardiac arrest, time is of the essence. A new study from the New England Journal of Medicine, however, finds that a longer period of cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be no better than a shorter one.


What's bad sleep costing us? Try $65 billion

Lack of sleep has been linked to health problems like high blood pressure and even early death, and now a new study tallies another price: insomnia costs the average American worker 11.3 days, or $2,280 in lost productivity each year. That adds up to $63.2 billion (and 252.7 workdays) for the whole country.
