States miss healthcare deadline

Some of the nation’s largest states have missed the deadline that would allow residents who were denied insurance due to medical problems the opportunity to apply for new federal health coverage.

Family of melanoma victim speaks out in new PSAs

Jaime Regen Rea spent her high school lunch hours tanning in a nearby salon in an effort to be tan and popular. Jaime, who also spent time in the sun, went from a self-proclaimed tanning bed addict to a melanoma patient in just a couple of years. Jaime was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, at age 20 and died just three weeks shy of her 30th birthday. Now her family is honoring Jaime's memory by participating in the American Academy of Dermatology's new TV and print public service advertisements (PSAs) that educate people about the increased risk of melanoma from tanning beds and sun exposure.

Prostate cancer patients “on hold” for tumor-fighting drug

Prostate cancer patients seeking Dendreon Corp.’s new tumor-fighting vaccine, Provenge, face delays of a year or more as hospital waiting lists dwarf the company’s capacity to produce medicine.

Diabetes patients may benefit from artificial pancreas

At a recent symposium sponsored by the ADA, experts discussed the development of a closed-loop artificial pancreas that they expect will provide significant benefits to patients with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes by providing continuous glucose monitoring, an adjustable insulin pump, and delivering glucagon, which helps prevent blood sugars from dropping too low.
