Surgeries going viral: Tweeting in the operating room

At Memorial Hermann Northwest Hospital in Houston, TX surgeons completed the first Twittercast of a live open heart surgery. The hospital hopes that this will encourage other surgical teams to use the social media platform in the OR to connect to other health professionals. This live surgery perspective simulates traditional stadium seating where medical students and the public viewed and reviewed a live surgery. Surgery Twittercasts can be used to educate and inform patients and healthcare providers and spark conversation about the surgery at hand.

Surgery provides a new head of hair for 8-year-old DUI victim

In September 2008 4-year-old Summer Moll was hit by a drunk driver in a violent car accident that killed her mother and left her with a fractured skull, and broken arms, legs, and pelvis. She will undergo her final surgery this month, a tissue expander, which involves using balloons to stretch out the skin by filling it with saline. Doctors hope to give the 8-year-old a chance to grow back a full head of hair.

Creators of Lap Band weight loss procedure want approval for use in adolescents

Makers of the popular weight loss solution the Lap Band are looking for FDA approval to market the procedure to children ages 14 and up. The creators argue that the adult population has seen significant success using the procedure, and that obese teens could benefit from having the surgery early to prevent long-term health problems caused by obesity. Some physicians argue that the procedure in children is too risky, since many adolescents are not fully developed, and that teens should learn to manage their weight with proper eating, increased physical activity, and support from their parents.

Study shows that knee replacement surgery can save lives

Surgeons are well aware that knee replacement surgery can reduce pain and improve quality of life post-surgery, but a new study has found it may also reduce the risk of various diseases and impact health and longevity. Patients who received a joint replacement had an 11% lower risk of heart failure and lost more weight than those who did not.
