Obese patients at double the risk of airway problems during anesthesia

Using capnography could significantly reduce deaths and brain damage from airway problems; absence of a capnograph contributed to 74% of deaths from these events during the study.


Singing can reduce BP before knee replacement surgery

Studies have suggested that listening to music can reduce BP, but a recent case report found that producing music or singing also has potential therapeutic effects in the preoperative setting.


Bariatric surgery may reduce migraines

A small study reported in the journal Neurology has found that bariatric surgery reduced the incidence and severity of migraine headaches. The degree of improvement correlated directly with the amount of weight lost, researchers said.


Young cancer patient has rare rotation surgery

Two years ago, a broken femur revealed a softball-sized tumor just above the boy’s knee. This week, Ohio State surgeons amputated the boy’s lower leg, removed the tumor, rotated the leg and reattached it so that his ankle now functions as his knee. And thanks to a prosthetic lower leg and foot, he’s back playing sports.
