Patients who have gastric bypass surgery may reduce their dementia risk

Obesity and type 2 diabetes put patients at increased risk for developing Alzheimer disease. In a recent small study, researchers found that six months after weight loss from bariatric surgery, patients had a 22% reduction in the expression of amyloid protein, a precursor of beta-amyloid linked to Alzheimer disease.

Study: Don't delay chemo after colorectal cancer surgery

A retrospective JAMA study of more than 15,000 patients found that delaying adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery for colorectal cancer is associated with lower rates of survival. The researchers said adjuvant chemo should start as soon as possible; starting chemotherapy at 12 weeks after surgery instead of 4 weeks resulted in a 14% decrease in the survival rate.

Carotid endarterectomy may be better cardiac intervention for women

A study in the Journal of Vascular Surgery has found that for women who need treatment for cerebrovascular disease, carotid endarterectomy may be the better than carotid angioplasty and stenting. The perception that women are more likely than men to have perioperative strokes after carotid endarterectomy is unfounded, researchers said.

Robot-assisted laparoscopy beats open surgery for uterine fibroids

Shorter hospitalization, less blood loss, and a quicker return to normal living are three of the benefits of robotic-assisted laparoscopic myomectomy (RALM) for uterine fibroids, compared with open surgery, according to a retrospective review. Although the robot-assisted surgery takes longer, researchers said the improved visualization and smaller instruments made suturing the areas of fibroid removal more accurate.
