Hospital investigated for lax supervision of student surgery

An investigation has turned up violations of state regulations at Upstate University Hospital, Syracuse, NY, including the case of a student doctor performing a complex operation on a patient’s spine while a supervising doctor not qualified to do the operation oversaw it.

Surgery may be safely performed in low-income settings with limited resources, according to the results of a study reported in the August issue of the Archives of Surgery.

A California woman had 80 percent of her stomach removed through her mouth using a minimally invasive technique, according to surgeons who say it may be the first of its kind in the world.


Acromegaly patient stretches out for Gamma Knife surgery

After reaching the treatment limits of open surgery, standard radiation, and medication, the world’s tallest living man Sultan Kosen, (8 feet 2 inches), recently underwent Gamma Knife surgery in an attempt to inactivate the benign tumor in his brain’s pituitary gland, which has caused him to grow without ceasing for the past 17 years.
