Nadia Ilse was bullied by her classmates from an early age based on the size of her ears. Now at 14-years-old, she is the most recent success story of the New York-based non-profit organization known as Little Baby Face. The organization, which offers free plastic surgery to bullied teens, paid for $40,000 worth of facial reconstructive surgery for Nadia, giving her a new lease on life.

Jacklyn Tucker, an 11-year-old Florida girl, was attacked by a friend’s dog during a sleepover. The Jack Russell terrier/English bulldog tore off three-quarters of her upper lip and a small portion of her nose. Since the severed skin died due to blood vessel damage, doctors at St. Mary’s Medical Center had to repair the wound by using tissue from Tucker’s bottom lip.

BMX biker Arielle Martin had a third surgery following a devastating crash, knocking her out of the London Olympics. Martin suffered a liver laceration and a collapsed lung. While these injuries were initially considered life-threatening, doctors are hopeful that this surgery will help remedy fluid buildup in her abdomen.

A new study of older adults with cataracts shows that those who have had corrective vision surgery were less likely to suffer a hip fracture than those who didn’t receive surgery. While the findings don’t necessarily point to vision improvement preventing falls or fractures, they do suggest that eyesight has a role in these types of injuries.
