Nico Bastolla's parents noticed that their infant was abnormally restless and unable to stay quiet after bringing him home from the hospital. After several months of checkups, unexplained eating patterns, and fits of laughter, doctors realized that the symptoms were caused by a brain tumor. Eventually, Nico's case found an answer in an experimental surgical device. The device enables surgeons to operate on hard-to-reach areas of the brain. The device has been named The Nico Myriad, after its first successful patient.
LA hospital performs first successful modified weight loss surgery
Weighing 309 pounds at 5'4, Diana Daniels was searching for weight loss surgery options beyond traditional LAP-BAND procedures. At Marina Del Rey Hospital in Los Angeles she was one of the first patients to undergo plicated band surgery, a procedure requiring the positioning of a LAP-BAND and the addition of sutured folds into the stomach, reducing its size dramatically for optimal weight loss. This surgery is expected to become as successful as the lap band procedure.
Conjoined twin dies after complex separation surgery
A team of 25 surgeons and anesthesiologists performed a complicated 20-hour surgery to separate a set of conjoined twins in a Chilean hospital. The 10-month-old twin died after organ failure, but her sibling survived the procedure and is in recovery stages.
A 4-year-old girl mutilated by U.S. drone attack scheduled for reconstructive surgery
Shakira, a child who was found in Pakistan badly burned and barely alive in 2009 has recently arrived in the U.S. to have a massive reconstructive surgery in Houston, TX. She was found in a trash bin along with two other girls who did not survive. Her American caretaker hopes this surgery will help her take back her life.
