OR Communication: Help or hindrance?

The institution of the “time-out,” the World Health Organization’s checklist, and other communication techniques were designed to help the OR team deliver better patient care, avoid errors, and improve the surgical experience. Take this survey and let us know if these techniques are helping your facility, or have we gone overboard with precautions without much improvement? We’ll publish the results in an upcoming issue of the journal.

“Awake” surgery receives high patient satisfaction scores

In a recent clinical feasibility study, a thoracic surgical team at the University of Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic in Spain performed surgery on 20 patients with upper tracheal stenosis using cervical epidural anesthesia, conscious sedation, and atomized local anesthetic. Neither intraoperative intubation nor jet ventilation was employed, and patients reported high levels of satisfaction afterward.

Better postoperative healing using platelets?

A new technique using platelet-rich plasma, made from a patient’s own blood, is being used to treat muscle sprains, tendon pulls and tears, arthritis, bone fractures, and even surgical wounds.

New Web site encourages adverse event reports

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) launched the Safety Reporting Portal (SRP) web site allowing increased accessibility to submit reports concerning FDA-regulated products.
