Robotic surgery may help with hard-to-reach throat cancers

Head and neck surgeons at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., have discovered a robotic surgery technique that can be used to treat cancer in the narrow, hard-to-reach area beyond the tongue at the top of the larynx.

More men try plastic surgery

Of all plastic surgeries performed in the United States, the share of procedures on men has grown the most, from 8% in 2008 to 13 % in 2010. Popular plastic surgery reality shows are one factor--men see guys like themselves (not just celebrities or actors) getting plastic surgery without taking too much time off from work.

Statin use may reduce postoperative kidney problems

Older patients who take statins had significantly lower rates of acute renal injury and mortality after surgery, according to a study. Statin users had an additional 16% reduction in the incidence of renal injury, a 17% reduction in the risk of dialysis, and a 21% lower 30-day mortality.

Preoperative hyponatremia linked to poor cardiac surgery outcomes

Patients who have hyponatremia before cardiac surgery had significantly higher rates of death, longer hospital stays, and complications, according to a study of 4,370 patients at Ohio State Medical Center. Even after adjusting for baseline clinical and operative variables, the hyponatremic patients still had poorer outcomes.
