Hip resurfacing “unacceptable” for women, study says

An operation known as hip resurfacing -- an alternative to hip replacement often recommended for younger patients ­-- is prone to frequent failure and should not be used in women, a new study shows.


Medicare fines over hospitals’ readmitted patients

As of Monday, Medicare has begun fining hospitals that have too many patients readmitted within 30 days of discharge due to complications. The penalties are part of a broader push under President Barack Obama's healthcare law to improve quality while also trying to save taxpayers money.


Prosthetic implants can now be enlarged as children grow

Surgeons from Boston Children’s Hospital have successfully implanted an expandable prosthetic heart valve in several children with mitral valve disease. While the implants function similarly to traditional prosthetic valves, the expandable valves can be enlarged as a child grows, which prevents the need for repeat valve replacement surgery. This new implant has the potential to revolutionize and ameliorate care for youth with complex mitral valve disease.
