Sept. 11 attacks nearly stopped infant's transplant

Hospital ranks, mortality rates based on chance?

Although more prominent around the time new top-hospitals lists come out, skeptics about hospital rankings again rear their heads. A new study published this week in Pediatrics finds that reported mortality rates used for hospital rankings are statistically imprecise with limited measures to compare quality of care.


Hospital fined for leaving bottle inside patient

Torrance Memorial Medical Center was fined $50,000 by the state for leaving a small plastic bottle inside a patient during surgery. The local hospital was one of a dozen hospitals issued fines for mistakes that were likely to cause serious injury or death, the California Department of Public Health announced Wednesday.
