Online CE: Adolescent contraception: Sorting out the facts | ||
|
Adolescent contraception is a complex issue for healthcare providers. Because sexual activity often precedes the ability to make responsible sexual decisions, clinicians are encouraged to provide anticipatory guidance to adolescent patients and their families concerning sexual behavior and appropriate contraception methods. Ideally, parents will actively participate in this process, but often, the responsibility for this critical guidance falls solely on clinicians. Providing a place for open, honest confidential conversation about sex and sexuality, reinforcing responsible sexual behaviors, and teaching strategies for avoiding risky situations and behaviors are all responsibilities of the clinician caring for a sexually active adolescent.
