SPECIALIZATION Tisch Hospital With approximately 600-plus beds, Tisch Hospital is an acute care teaching facility with a patient population that includes referrals from the greater New York and New England areas. We offer a wide selection of clinical services, including pediatrics, obstetrics, general medicine, cardiology, oncology, general surgery, and a 32-bed ICU divided into four subspecialties, including cardiovascular surgery, coronary care, medical, and surgical areas. Also available are surgical specialty units encompassing neurosurgery and transplant (each with dedicated intensive care units), plastic and resconstructive surgery, GYN, GU, ENT, orthopedics, and vascular surgery as well as PACU/cardiovascular recovery room. Both experienced RNs and new BSN graduates are accepted in these units. Additional opportunities for the experienced RN are found in the OR suite, cardiovascular OR, day-surgery units, a high-tech 16-bed adult epilepsy unit, a short stay cardiac and vascular unit, and a newly opened ambulatory care cancer center. Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine In the Rusk Institute, a 142-bed rehabilitation facility for both adult and pediatric patients, the nursing focus is on the patient's ability rather than disability. The RN is an integral member of the multidisciplinary health team, participating in direct patient care, patient/family/teaching and discharge planning. CONTINUING EDUCATION All new BSN graduates join the Nurse Residency Program which provides an intensive, mentored, clinical work experience during the first year of practice. A comprehensisve 8-week orientation program, including preceptorship experience, is provided to all new RN employees, and a progressive, innovative Staff Development Department provides continuing education on a 24-hour basis. Free tuition of 24 credits a year is available at NYU toward nursing degrees after 6 months of full-time employment. Reimbursements of $5,000 per year are also available toward nursing degrees at other institutions. (Federal regulations requiring taxation of education benefits apply to both tuition remission and tuition reimbursement.) SALARY AND BENEFITS Financial: Base salary of $63,937 annually plus four differentials: (1) education, $1,300 for BSN; (2) up to $9,000 for 12 years' experience; (3) shift differential of $5,600 for evenings and nights; and (4) salary differentials of up to $6,000 a year on the clinical ladder for the four levels of practice. Specialty certification bonuses are available. Vacation: A paid time-off benefit of 24 days per calendar year, 8 paid holidays, and 12 sick days per year are available. These benefits are prorated for part-time RNs. Fringe: A flexible benefits program is offered, which includes five options for health care coverage, three dental plans, a prescription plan, and a vision plan. Parking: Subsidized parking is available nearby. PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT A Four-Step Clinical Ladder: Clinical expertise, professional performance, and education are the criteria for our four levels of practice. Each level offers increased salary, a greater degree of autonomy, plus the continuing reward of direct patient care. And we encourage staff involvement in improving standards of care and in expediting change within the profession. A hospital-wide computer system is in place for ease of nursing documentation, decreasing paperwork, and allowing RNs more time to focus on patient care activities.
