Those of us who’ve been in practice for a long time ask the question,”What is the future of nursing?” I am happy to say that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in Collaboration with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) has established a major initiative on the Future of Nursing. According to the RWJF website (http://www.rwjf.org/), this initiative will examine the capacity of the nursing workforce to meet the demands of a reformed health care and public health system. It will develop a set of bold national recommendations, including ones that address the delivery of nursing services in a shortage environment and the capacity of the nursing education system. The Initiative will find solutions to the issues that continue to challenge the nursing profession and the patients they serve, and to build upon the solutions that nursing can provide in improving quality and patient care.
The Initiative will be holding three Forums to discuss these issues. On October 19th, 2009, the Forum on the Future of Nursing: Acute Care took place in Los Angeles, California. On December 3rd, 2009, the Forum on the Future of Nursing: Primary Care, Long-Term Care, Community Health, and Public Health will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. And on February 22nd, 2010 in Houston, Texas the Forum on the Future of Nursing: Education will take place. These forums are open to the public and consist of presenters who are the leading health care/nursing visionaries today.
Wolters Kluwer Health, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins believes in this Initiative. One of the best ways to effect change within the profession and within the healthcare system is to disseminate information that will improve nursing practice and improve patient outcomes. Several of our journals are working with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; as well as other organizations, by publishing articles and other resources that support this endeavor. Lippincott’s NursingCenter’s Future of Nursing Page is a compilation of those activities. We have the opportunity to significantly impact the way health care is delivered. Use these resources to help make a difference.
Sincerely,
Anne Dabrow Woods MSN, RN, CRNP, ANP-BC

Few health care reform efforts will affect patients as directly as determining how nurses can best work toward ensuring high-quality, affordable care for all Americans. As the chairperson and vice chairperson of the Initiative on the Future of Nursing, a new effort created by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine, we are seeking innovative ideas that address important nursing issues, such as the nurse shortage and regulatory and reimbursement barriers to nursing, and which can help transform the way Americans receive care.
