Case report describes woman presenting with cystic nodule on the vulva during pregnancy
FRIDAY, Aug. 21, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Hidradenoma papilliferum in association with pregnancy has been illustrated in a case report published online Aug. 12 in the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology.
Colt M. McClain, Ph.D., from the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and colleagues describe the case of a 33-year-old who developed a cystic nodule on the vulva during pregnancy. Immediately following cesarean section, punch biopsy was performed.
On histologic examination, the researchers identified a dermal tumor composed of glandular structures, which were arranged in a labyrinth pattern. Cytoplasmic vacuolization, large atypical nuclei, prominent nucleoli, and scattered eosinophilic luminal secretions were displayed by these glandular structures. The tumor cells were found to be diffusely positive for CK7 and progesterone receptor on immunohistochemical analysis, with focal expression of mammaglobin and GCDFP-15. The tumor cells were negative for CK20 and estrogen. These findings were consistent with hidradenoma papilliferum.
"Our unusual (and to our knowledge first reported) case demonstrates hidradenoma papilliferum in association with pregnancy and raises the possibility of cytologic atypia and lactational change being secondary to hormonal changes in pregnancy," the authors write.
