Psoriasis Patients at Higher Risk for Other Health Issues

Inflammatory effects of disease can impact entire body, expert says

FRIDAY, July 29, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- Treating psoriasis might reduce the risk for other health problems, according to a report from the annual American Academy of Dermatology Summer Meeting, held from July 28 to 31 in Boston.

The inflammatory effects of psoriasis can affect the entire body, Jashin Wu, M.D., director of dermatology research at the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, said in an American Academy of Dermatology news release. "People with psoriasis, particularly those with more severe disease, have an increased risk for a variety of other health problems, including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, stroke, and heart attack."

Treating skin inflammation in psoriasis patients may also lower inflammation in other areas of the body and reduce cardiovascular disease risk, Wu said. All psoriasis patients should seek treatment for their condition, maintain a healthy weight, and talk to their doctor about being screened for cardiovascular issues.

"Psoriasis patients, even those with mild disease, need to be aware of how this condition affects their overall health," Wu concluded.
