Views of primary care physicians (PCPs) on whether sections of electronic health records should be shared with patients. A report in the December 2011 Annals of Internal Medicine found that 74% to 92% of the surveyed PCPs eligible to participate in a volunteer program to share open visit notes believed that such sharing would improve patient communication and education and 36% to 62% felt that patient care would become safer. However, 43% to 92% thought that access to notes might increase patient worry and confusion, and 36% to 50% anticipated an increase in questions from patients. PCPs in Boston, Seattle, and Pennsylvania answered the survey, and those participating in the note-sharing project were more supportive of the idea than nonparticipating PCPs.
