Aspire to Inquire

CALL TO CONVENTION

Aspire to Inquire is the theme of ANPD's 27th Annual National Convention, which will be at The David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a city of both inquiry and transformation. Pittsburgh is a center of inquiry, home to 68 colleges and universities. It is also a center of transformation; this one time "City of Steel" is now the "City of Bridges." It therefore is the perfect metaphor for ANPD's practice transformation from the past to the future, made possible by the spirit of inquiry. Join other nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners as they gather together to learn, network, and transform their practice. The preconvention opens on July 18, with the ANPD Annual Convention following on July 19-22. This is the premier education and networking event for NPD practitioners, featuring engaging, expert keynote speakers, relevant concurrent sessions, and opportunities to network with colleagues from across the county and globe.

The content planning committee is excited to announce that the preconvention workshops have expanded to 15, facilitated by invited experts. There is something for every NPD practitioner, with concurrent sessions for all, from novice to expert practitioners. Participants can select from education tracks including leadership; evidence-based practice, nursing research, and quality improvement; collaborative partnerships; career development, precepting, and mentoring; nursing professional development; and technology, informatics, and simulation. The exhibit hall will be chock-full of vendors offering the latest products and services.

PRECONVENTION

Prior to the start of the convention, the preconvention workshops kick off and provide unbelievable opportunities. This year, we are offering more workshops than ever before, presented by invited experts in the NPD specialty. These workshops require a separate registration and fee. Planning to take the NPD certification examination? Then the 2-day Certification Preparation Course is for you. CONCURRENT SESSIONS

This year, there are 54 concurrent sessions, offered in 60-minute blocks of time. The content planning committee reviewed hundreds of well-written, relevant abstracts and selected the best. Sessions are available for all levels of expertise, from novice to expert. Topic areas this year include career development, precepting, and mentoring; collaborative partnerships; evidence-based practice, nursing research, and quality improvement; leadership; nursing professional development; and technology, informatics, and simulation.

POSTERS

Poster Sessions are an ANPD tradition; this year, we are shaking up the tradition a little. In addition to the traditional poster presentation, the Convention Content Planning Committee is implementing two Rapid Fire Poster Sessions. These sessions feature six poster presenters, each discussing their poster for 10 minutes. Each convention participant will have the opportunity to pick a favorite poster and vote for The Participants' Favorite Award. This will be a tough job, because there are over 100 attractive, relevant posters to choose from. Posters are categorized in the same topic areas as concurrent sessions.

EXHIBIT HALL

In the exhibit hall, a variety of vendors offer products and services for the NPD practitioner. They are ready and willing to demonstrate their wares and answer your questions. This is a great way to learn about the latest and greatest developments to serve your specialty while networking with colleagues.

Be sure to drop by ANPD's newly designed booth, where book signings for the new leadership text Leadership in Nursing Professional Development: An Organizational and System Focus and the NPD Scope and Standards will be held.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT

Since Pittsburgh was the home of Fred Rogers of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood fame, this year the convention planning committee chose The Fred Rogers Company as the ANPD Convention's Community Service Project. The Fred Rogers Company was established in 1971 as the production company behind Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Today, the company produces a variety of popular and meaningful media that builds on the founder's legacy, shares his wisdom, and engages new generations of children and families. The company's work-including three new top-rated and award-winning programs on PBS, complementary educational games, apps, books, music, and related resources for adults-supports children's social-emotional development, gets them excited about learning, and brings out the best in parents and professionals. What a great organization for NPD practitioners engaged in lifelong learning to support. You can find more about The Fred Roger's Company at http://www.fredrogers.org/. Cash or check donations will be accepted onsite-look for the red trolley at the ANPD booth in the exhibit hall.

NETWORKING

For the third year in a row, the ANPD Convention will offer speed networking at the start of the convention. This year's speed networking event is named "Building Bridges" and is organized by Special Interest Groups. The Special Interest Groups will be general NPD practice; leadership, management, and administration; research and evidence-based practice; and academics/partnerships.

FIRST TIME AT CONVENTION?

If this is your first time at the convention, watch for the convention planning webinar, which will be released in June. The webinar explains how to plan your ANPD Convention experience to get the most out of it. Watch for an announcement in Trendlines, the ANPD Newsletter, as well as via e-mail. As a newcomer, be sure to check out "Star Search." Star Search is an opportunity for members to participate in a presentation competition. Four participants are given 10 minutes to present on an NPD topic and are judged by the Convention Content Planning Committee. The participant receiving the highest rating is invited to present a 60-minute concurrent session at the 2017 Annual Convention.
