NANN 2017 DELEGATION TO CUBA

NANN is organizing a delegation to Cuba in March 2017. We have been invited by MSc. Idalmis Infante-Ochoa, the President of the Cuban Society of Nursing, to meet with Cuban healthcare providers and learn about the role of Cuban nurses. The Cuban Society of Nursing was founded in 1976, and its primary focus has been the advancement of nursing practice in its country. Delegates will participate in professional meetings and healthcare site visits to learn about neonatal nursing practices and how nurses address common challenges with limited resources. The topics of discussion for the delegation include

* Role of parents in care of their infant, such as visitation, kangaroo care, rooming in, etc;

* Advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) role in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU);

* Long-term follow-up care and the community resources needed to support it;

* Model of care delivery in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU); and

* Education and preparation for practice in the NICU.

The tentative itinerary includes a discussion on the role of the APRN in the NICU in Cuba with the Cuban Nursing Society, a meeting with a representative of the North American Division of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the People, a panel presentation and overview of the Cuban Health Care System, a hospital visit to observe nursing best practices and to learn about the role of parents in the NICU care model, a visit to the National School of Public Health, a meeting with professors to discuss nursing education concerns, and visits to a community clinic and the Hogar Materno Infantil maternity clinic.
