Harrison Spencer, MD, MPH, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), died August 10, 2016. The editors of the Journal of Public Health Management & Practice are greatly saddened by the loss of this leader of public health practice and education as are all those who worked with him or benefited from his contributions to the field. He was an Epidemic Intelligence Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Harrison Spencer had worked in many locations of the world, including San Salvador, El Salvador, and Nigeria, on the eradication of malaria and other parasitic diseases. He was a former Dean of the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and was appointed as Dean of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1996. In 2000, he returned to the United States to lead ASPPH for 16 years. In this role, he greatly expanded the scope of the organization including adding programs in public health to the existing roster of schools. Harrison Spencer will be missed by his colleagues and students.
